What do our volunteers say?

We think that your time with Volunteering Goa will be the best time of your life, but don't just take our word for it.  Why not read what one of our volunteers has to say?

"I volunteered with Volunteering Goa for 3 months and had an amazing time. I felt instantly welcomed to Goa by the fantastic staff and I settled in brilliantly. I worked at an orphanage in South Goa and it was a completely life changing experience. I taught the children English and General Studies, as well as taking them to school, caring for them, completing domestic chores and even learning how to cook some amazing South Indian dishes! For part of my placement I repainted the orphanage and it was a very rewarding (if messy) experience, especially when the children got involved! It was an absolute joy to work with children who had overcome so much adversity in their life and I hope that volunteering with them helped them in some way, no matter how small. Beyond volunteering , the cultural days out offered by Volunteering Goa were fascinating and always exciting. My favourite was taking a canoe along the Mandovi River and watching the world go by! An incredibly relaxing experience!"

Fundraising for Volunteering Goa

Here at Volunteering Goa, we love fundraising.  In fact, we love it so much, we encourage all of our volunteers to fundraise part or all of the costs of their volunteering placement.

It's not just volunteers who can fundraise for us though.  If you're unable to volunteer, but want to raise money for one of the charities that we send volunteers to, we'll do everything we can to help you!  Some of our fundraisers have done amazing things for charity, including shaving their hair, climbing mountains and running marathons!

Don't worry, we don't expect everyone to run marathons! In fact, jewellery sales and baking cakes work well for us too!  So if you're thinking of volunteering and want to fundraise part of your program costs, or if you want to raise money for charity, why not email us at info@volunteering-goa.com with your ideas?

Volunteering can Change Lives!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
- Margaret Mead (1902-1978)

Here at Volunteering Goa we believe that volunteering really can change lives! The children in our orphanages always look forward to making new friends, learning about a new culture and keeping in touch when the volunteer goes home, happy to know that they are loved and cared about by someone so far away.  For the volunteer themselves, the experience is rewarding, eye opening and often an emotional one and many of our volunteers choose to stay in touch with Volunteering Goa and raise funds for our charities long after they've returned home.

If you want to volunteer or raise funds for one of our charities, please visit www.facebook.com/volunteeringgoa or email info@volunteering-goa.com.

Info about our parent charity

Today the Volunteering Goa team thought we would give you some information about our amazing parent charity, the Goa Anglican Centre.  This charity founded Volunteering Goa and we still have strong links with them.  The Goa Anglican Centre is a Christian organisation and it works hard to provide opportunities for the poor and vulnerable in India to try and improve their lives.  They work alongside a range of charities in Goa, Kerala and Mumbai, as well as working with charity clothing collections and running local qualification courses in Goa itself.

If you are interested in supporting the Goa Anglican Centre financially, you can sign up for their newsletter for just £1 a week.  The money raised is used to help the poor and those in need in Goa, and the financial benefits by sponsors and fundraisers of the Goa Anglican Centre can be seen in many of the orphanages that Volunteering Goa sends volunteers to!

If you want to visit the Goa Anglican Centre Website, please head to www.goaanglicancentre.webs.com.
You can also visit and like their official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GoaAnglican.

If you would like to sign up for their newsletter or would like to do fundraising for the Goa Anglican Centre or Volunteering Goa, please email us at info@volunteering-goa.com and we'll put you in touch with the right people!

Volunteering Goa Painting

A while ago we posted examples of the variety of skills our volunteers can bring to their placements.  Today, we thought we would share a picture of paintwork one of our Volunteering Goa volunteers did while they were completing a placement in one of our boys orphanages.

The boys in the orphanage said they wanted moons and stars on the walls - they weren't expecting an entire space scene complete with rockets and the solar system!  The painting took weeks to complete, and our volunteer often worked throughout the night to paint (apparently standing on ladders and painting a ceiling in the same room that the boys would play football in made night painting necessary!)

However, the boys in the orphanage were thrilled with the result, and our volunteer said that it was worth the long working hours to turn the house into a children's house that they can enjoy for years to come.

At Volunteering Goa we appreciate any skills that our volunteers can bring to their placements and sometimes even something like repainting a room can make a huge difference to the happiness and well being of the children in our homes.

If you want to get involved and you think you can improve the lives of the children in our care using your own unique skills, please get in touch!

Goa Community Volunteering Qualification

A lot of our focus at Volunteering Goa is on bringing international volunteers over to India to make a huge difference to the lives of those in need in Goa.  International volunteers are highly valued and the experience is rewarding and exciting for both the volunteer and the people that they work with.  However, here in Goa it is not just international volunteers who can help to make a difference.  Goans can also volunteer some of their time and a long term basis to help those in need in their own society.

By taking the Goa Community Volunteer Qualification, you can make a difference to other Indians who are in desperate need of your help, as well as gaining an excellent qualification!  This is a course that has been set up by our parent charity and awards you with a UK accredited qualification upon completion.

Do you live in or near Goa?  Are you interested in volunteering to help the lives of others in Goa and beyond and want to give something back to your community?  Do you also want to gain a great qualification through a UK accredited organisation? If the answer is yes, please check out www.goacvq.com to find out what courses are available and start dates.

If you want to know more about Volunteering Goa and the work that we do, please visit our facebook page.

Animal Volunteer work with Volunteering Goa

Another heart-warming animal picture to brighten your weekend! For those of you who weren't quite melted by our adorable pictures of rescued kittens, how about some gorgeous puppies eating?  (Well, standing in a bowl of food, but it's a start!)

Here at Volunteering Goa, we have animal volunteer work placements available for all you animal lovers out there.  The charity we work with looks after stray animals in a humane way, feeding them, tending to injuries, giving them vaccinations and neutering them before releasing them.  This vital work has a hugely positive effect on both the animals and people of Goa, as it helps to reduce the risk of rabies, curbs the population of stray animals and makes sure that the animals they treat are safe and healthy.

Are you interested in spending time feeding and caring for stray animals (big and small)? If you want to make a difference to the animals of Goa and you're interested in volunteering with Volunteering Goa, please check out the rest of our website or email info@volunteering-goa.com.

Childcare volunteer work in Goa

Do you love working with children?  Does it put a smile on your face when you put a smile on a child's face?  Are you interested in working with children in Goa but worried you don't have the right experience or skills to do so?

At Volunteering Goa, you don't have a be a teacher (or want to be a teacher) to join us in our orphanages in Goa.  In fact, only a small proportion of our volunteers have had any teaching experience at all!  What matters to us is a genuine interest in helping children in need and an enthusiastic attitude.  If you don't think you have the confidence to stand at the front of a class, you can take a back seat and work with children individually, play with them in small groups or even help behind the scenes in cooking, shopping and cleaning. We will find work that suits your skills and your confidence. And you never know, after a few months of living and working in Goa and becoming part of the orphanage family, you might realise you've learnt new skills and developed confidence you never realised you had inside you!

Why not check out the rest of our website to find out more?  You can also email us if you have any questions at info@volunteering-goa.com.

Jewellery sale to raise funds for charity

One of our visitors to Goa, Hannah Batcheler, has been busy making jewellery for the Bethesda Life Centre, one of the charities that we work with in Goa. She recently raised £55, which has made a huge difference to the charity, and she's getting ready for another sale in April.

Hanna has spent time in Goa working with the children at our charity, so she knows only too well their plight and how every penny counts.  Some of our charities often find themselves with little or no funds, meaning their future, and the futures of the children are often in question.  So we're thrilled that people like Hannah are putting their time and effort into making a difference for these children, no matter where they are in the world!

If you're interested in purchasing any of her beautiful items of Jewellery, and you want to help her to raise more money for children in Goa, please keep on checking back for more details of the next sale.  You can also like us on Facebook to find out more.

If you want to get involved with fundraising for our charities, or if you have some great ideas you'd like to share, please email us at info@volunteering-goa.com.  If you're interested in volunteering in Goa or you want to find out more about our work, please check out the rest of our website.

2014 volunteer work available in Goa

So January is nearly over (hooray!), but we still have months of wet, grey, miserable weather ahead of us in the UK.  Many of us are already dreaming of our holiday plans this year, but have you ever thought about giving up some of your time to help others?

With Volunteering Goa you get the best of both worlds.  You can spend two months living in the tropical state of Goa, famous for its sandy beaches, lush palm trees and incredible nightlife, whilst at the same time helping those most in need in this tiny Indian state.

Many tourists to Goa never truly get to experience the "real" Goa; the lovely locals, traditional festivals and the harsh reality of the poverty faced by thousands on a daily basis.  With Volunteering Goa you can help to combat this poverty, making a real difference to the lives of others whilst also enjoying the sights and attractions of Goa.

Interested?  Why not check out our Facebook page?  If you want to know more, you can also email us at info@volunteering-goa.com to request an information pack.

Volunteer with animals in Goa!

Attention animal lovers! Do you think that you would be well suited to working with animals during your volunteer placement in Goa?  Would you want to get stuck in with a local animal charity?  Great news - we have volunteer placements in a local animal charity, working mostly with stray animals close to our main centre in Goa.

Anyone who has visited India will tell you that the streets are overrun with stray dogs and cats.  This can cause a huge problem for the locals, as the animals often have diseases such as rabies which is extremely dangerous for anyone who may come into contact with the animal.  The strays might also be malnourished, too young to fend for themselves or even injured by other animals or through road accidents.

The charity that we send volunteers to work with helps to humanely treat stray animals before releasing them again, giving the cats and dogs the medical care they need, vaccinations and neutering operations, which in turn helps to curb the stray population of animals and reduce the risk of rabies for the locals. If you're interested in volunteering with animals in India, please like us on Facebook.

Live like a local with Volunteering Goa

Are you planning a gap year this year?  Perhaps you're visiting a number of countries over a year long period, or maybe you're just planning on getting away from it all and spending a few months in India.  Maybe Goa is on your wish list of destinations...

Instead of just passing through Goa as a tourist, why not spend 2 months living and volunteering here like a local with Volunteering Goa?  You'll get to live and work with local staff and children, eat genuine Indian food and get to know all the favourite hang outs of Goan people!  You'll learn skills like haggling in the markets or cooking dishes that aren't available in the tourist areas, you'll know the best way to get from a to b and you'll get to know the neighbours!

On top of that, you can make a huge difference to the lives of the children and staff in our orphanages and we guarantee that this will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life!!

So why not take yourself off the beaten tourist track, make a difference to those in need, and live life as a local in Goa!  Visit facebook.com/volunteeringgoa  to find out more.

Use your skills with Volunteering Goa

When you volunteer with Volunteering Goa, we appreciate all of your individual skills and talents and we know first-hand how those skills and talents can be used to improve the lives of the people in need that we work with.

Perhaps you are an amazing cook and you can use those skills to help in the kitchens at one of our children's homes (you can even swap recipes with the staff and learn something new yourself!).  Or perhaps you are a wonderful listener and you can support the staff at our orphanages, listening to them and advising them when it all gets too much at the end of a long day.  Or maybe you are great at listening to children and can calm them down and talk them through difficult situations.

You could be a creative person, and use your artistic abilities to improve the houses that the children live in, making it feel more like home.  Just check out the picture above to see how one of our more creative volunteers repainted one of our orphanages to make it more like a home for the children!

Maybe you're the sporty type and can teach children new team games, giving them a chance to blow off steam and learn invaluable team building skills at the same time.  Or you could be a skilled teacher, helping our children with their studies to improve their prospects and futures.  Or maybe you're one of those people who will get stuck in and show unrivalled dedication in whatever work you're asked to do!

Whatever your skills, talents or experience, you can make a huge difference to the lives of our children and staff in Goa.  Please check out our website to find our more about our work and how you can get involved or find us on Facebook.

Teach and care for children in Goa

Are you thinking of a career in teaching or childcare? Why not come to Goa and help children with their school studies and even have a go at teaching them! It's great experience and any future employers or universities will really appreciate the incredible experiences and skills you would have gained by teaching and caring for children in Goa.

For those of you who are already in teaching or childcare jobs, have you ever wanted to take a step back from the inspections, targets and observations and just focus on the children in your class?  Or do you fancy the challenge of helping children's learning to progress without the fancy resources you have in your classrooms in the west? When you teach in Goa, you really can get your love of education back!

Volunteering with Volunteering Goa is a hugely rewarding experience and is an amazing addition to your CV, especially as you can earn a qualification as you volunteer! Visit the pages on this website to find out more.  You can also email us.

What do our Volunteering Goa volunteers say?

Here at Volunteering Goa, we think that having the chance to volunteer in India, help those less fortunate than yourself and learn how to live in this incredible country is an absolutely amazing experience!  But don't take our word for it - read what one of our previous volunteers said about their experience with Volunteering Goa...

"When I think back to my time spent in Goa, it was the best four months I could have imagined. Volunteering, travelling, meeting new people in one of the most colourful and vibrant places on earth, it was an experience second to none. My time with Volunteering Goa lead me to volunteer for Mother Theresa?s Roses, a charity that supports many vulnerable people all over India. I had the privilege of working in Quepem's Boys Home where my help with teaching, cooking, cleaning, shopping and general support of the children and staff was greatly needed. It was extremely humbling to see how a little time, effort and money could make such a huge impact on the lives of others. However cliché it may sound my time in India did change my life. I now regularly remind myself of how fortunate I am to have my education, healthcare, family and friends and how lucky I was to experience the food, climate, art, dance, music and culture of India while improving the lives of others. I can't wait to go back." - Meg H (Volunteer 2011)

Raise money for our parent charity

As it's January, the Volunteering Goa team are sure lots of you have grabbed yourself a bargain in the post Christmas sales.  Lots of you have probably done some shopping online too.

Did you know that there is a simple way of raising money for our parent charity, the Goa Anglican Centre?  All you have to do is register your email address at www.easyfundraising.org.uk and you can raise money as you shop online without having to do anything.  It costs you nothing and only takes a second to join, but the more people that sign up, the more our parent charity can help those in need in India, some of the same people that Volunteering Goa sends volunteers to work with!  So if you could spare a second to join easy fundraising and select the Goa Anglican Centre, we would be really grateful.

If you want to know more about our parent charity, visit their official website at www.goaanglicancentre.webs.com.  If you want to know more about Volunteering Goa, please like us on Facebook.

Only 6 months til the summer!

This post is aimed at all those who are going back to school (or university) tomorrow!  Although it might feel a bit rubbish going back after two glorious weeks off for the Christmas holidays, just remember that the summer will be here before you know it!  The Volunteering Goa team are already looking forward to the summer and are making lots of exciting plans.  What about you?

For those of you who are thinking of taking a gap year in the summer, why not volunteer as part of it?  Volunteering gives you amazing skills and means that you can live in India as a local, rather than just a tourist.  You get to know the local hangouts, drink at the local bars, eat at the local restaurants and even make local friends (and from our experience, many of our old volunteers still keep in touch with their Goan friends on Facebook once they're back in the UK!).  As well as immersing yourself in Goan life, you can make a huge difference to the lives of children or animals in India and your volunteering placement will be something you will never forget.

So, if you're making your summer plans (and who can blame you when it's so dark and dreary outside), why not check  Facebook to find out more about how you can help those in need in India!

If you have any questions, please email info@volunteering-goa.com

Goa Community Volunteering Qualification

Here at Volunteering Goa, we don't just expect international volunteers to make a difference in India.  We also believe that people who live in India can also make a huge difference to the lives of the poor and vulnerable by volunteering too!

If you live in India, you might be considering how you can make a difference to the world and to the lives of those less fortunate than yourself.  You might also be looking to take a qualification that improves your chances to study abroad, especially in the UK, from a UK accredited qualifications organisation.  If you're interested in volunteering with those in need in India and you want to gain a qualification to boost your career, please visit www.goacvq.com to find out more.

For volunteers who have come from the UK or other countries abroad, when you volunteer with Volunteering Goa we offer you the chance to earn a UK recognised qualification that also gives you extra UCAS points, which is great if you're taking a gap year or if you're thinking about going to university after your volunteering placement ends.  If you choose to take the qualification, you will get to study alongside Indian students, giving you an amazing chance to meet like-minded individuals and make friends with local people.  Check out www.goacvq.com to find out more!

Feeding the poor in Goa with Volunteering Goa

When you volunteer with Volunteering Goa you could be working on a wide range of projects, from child care to animal care and all sorts in between!  Recently, one of our volunteers accompanied one of the charities we work with while they distributed food bags to the poor on the streets in Goa.  The charity is called Mother Teresas Roses and it set up and run a number of orphanages and children's homes in Goa and Mumbai, as well as feeding the bathing the poor on the streets.

The photo to the left shows a family at a train station in Goa.  They had put together all of their money to pay for their train tickets and, as a result, had no money to buy food for the journey.  As travelling by train in India can take a very long time (often upwards of 24 hours), the family would have gone hungry for an extended period of time.  However, thanks to the charity and the Volunteering Goa volunteer, the family were given food bags to provide them with enough food for their journey ahead.  Although only a small gesture, that food bag made a real difference to the family, especially as without the support of the charity they would have had nothing to eat.

When you volunteer in Goa, you could help with charities like this and make a real difference to the lives of people in Goa.  If you want to get involved with the work that we do here in India, please email info@volunteering-goa.com and take the first step towards making a real difference to the lives of the poor and vulnerable in Goa.

Volunteer in 2014 with Volunteering Goa

So Christmas is over and we're all looking forward to 2014!  For many of us that means making New Years resolutions or making changes to our lives (like going to the gym or learning a new skill).  Many of you might want to make a difference to the world in 2014 by volunteering either in the UK or abroad.

Perhaps you are planning a gap year or sabbatical and are considering spending part of that time volunteering and giving something back to the world. With Volunteering Goa we can offer volunteering placements in Goa that last between 2 and 10 months and you can make a huge difference to the lives of children and animals in India.  We work with a number of local charities and as a small company we can offer our volunteers a personal service, making sure your volunteering placement is suited to you as a person.  We also offer days out and cultural experiences as part of our package, so as well as helping and teaching others you can immerse yourself in a new culture and learn some new skills yourself!  For those who are taking a gap year before starting university, Volunteering Goa also offers a course that you can take alongside and after the volunteering placement that, once complete, will earn you some extra UCAS points.  Bonus!

However, we also understand that not everyone has the time in 2014 to move 5000 miles away to India to volunteer and travel with us!  But you can still help the work that Volunteering Goa does by fundraising, either for one of the local charities that we work with or for our parent charity, The Goa Anglican Centre.  The photo above shows Martin who ran a half marathon to raise money (don't worry, we don't expect you all to run marathons - bake sales, sponsored walks or anything else you can think of will do just fine!).  If you want to help people in India by fundraising or if you have some amazing ideas, please email us at info@volunteering-goa.com and we'll put you in touch with the right people.

Thank you all for your support and we hope you all had an amazing Christmas.

Merry Christmas from the Volunteering Goa team

So Christmas is here, and in the spirit of the season the Volunteering Goa team wanted to post a message of thanks to all those involved in their work.

First, to all those who have raised funds for our parent charity, the Goa Anglican Centre or for any of the chairities that we work with, thank you so much for your support and generosity! Next we want to thank our extremely dedicated Managing Director Richard Lees who works tirelessly to help those most in need in India and to change the lives of both the poor and the volunteers that he works with in Goa. We would also like to thank the staff and volunteers that work at our charities; without their hard work none of what Volunteering Goa does would be possible. Finally, and most importantly, we want to thank the children that we work with in Goa. They have overcome so much adversity in their short lives yet they remain positive and they are always an absolute joy to visit and work with!

To all of our friends, followers, staff, children and supporters, we hope you have a peaceful and happy Christmas!

Volunteering Goa team visit a local orphanage

Today we wanted to share a photo with you from a recent visit the Volunteering Goa team took to one of the orphanages we work with.  It was taken during a Sunday afternoon outdoor games session and we just love how happy the children look and how much fun they are having!
Many of the children Volunteering Goa works with have overcome a lot of adversity in their short lives and with the help, support and love of the staff at the centres and the Volunteering Goa volunteers, they really are thriving.

If you want to be a part of helping these children who are in so much need, or if you know someone who you think would be an amazing volunteer in Goa, please like us on Facebook or email info@volunteering-goa.com

Thank you all for your continued support!

Christmas with the Volunteering Goa team

It's nearly Christmas and in Goa the preparations are well under way to celebrate the season.  Children across the orphanages we work with are getting excited and are joining in the Christmas fun by building nativity scenes outside their houses and decorating the insides beautifully too!  The Volunteering Goa team have been working hard at decorating the volunteer house too and we think our Christmas tree looks fantastic in the beautiful Goan sunshine!

One of the Charities that we send volunteers to work with, The Bethesda Life Centre, recently put on a spectacle of a show, with their boys choir singing traditional Christmas songs and carols for an audience at Holy Cross Church, Porvorim, Goa.  We thought we would share the Christmas cheer and show you one of the posters for the show, which gives lots of information about this amazing charity.
